SsangYong Rexton G4 - the second generation of the flagship SUV of the Korean brand SsangYong presented in March 2017 in Seoul. With the change of generations, the production car inherited the design of the concept LIV-2 SUV, and also received a new high-strength steel frame and previously unavailable electronic security systems. The G4 index in this case stands for the concept of Great 4 Revolution (Great Revolution), which reflects the technological innovations and rapidly changing trends caused by the fourth industrial revolution.
As conceived by the designers of the SUV, its appearance should be associated with the majestic Greek temple of the Parthenon. The centrally located wing-shaped grille runs from headlight to headlight for a dynamic and solid appearance. Sidewall lines starting from the rear fenders hint at dynamism, while thin A-pillars and wider C-pillars "create a powerful yet sophisticated image" through contrast.
The new Rexton received an upgraded frame made of heavy-duty steel "Giga Steel" with a yield strength of 1.5 GPa developed by the Korean steel company Posco. The body also consists of 81.7% high-strength steel of various grades, and according to SsangYong, this value is a record for the segment of large frame SUVs. The optimization of the design had a positive effect on the mass of the car, and also increased its safety.
The chassis configuration has been retained: the Rexton has a double wishbone suspension in front, and a multi-link rear. The drive is rear or full, implemented through a 4Tronic transmission with a rigid connection of the front axle, reduction gear and fully electronic control.
SsangYong Rexton G4 is equipped with 9 airbags, including for the driver's knees and side airbags for the second row seats. In addition, systems from the Driver Assistance Technology Suite (ADAS) can be installed on the SUV: Autonomous Emergency Brake Assist (AEBS), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Blind Zone Control (BSD).
In a completely new cabin, a 9.2-inch multimedia complex display stands out. The system allows you to use the Apple CarPlay app for Android. And for greater convenience, the driver and passengers of the G4 Rexton can connect their devices based on the "Google" operating system via Wi-Fi. A 7-inch color screen has received a residence permit in the instrument cluster, and top versions, depending on the market, can please with upholstery of seats and other interior elements in soft nappa leather.
The volume of the trunk of the five-seater version of Rexton'a is from 784 liters to 1977 liters (with the backrests of the second row folded down). The trunk of the seven-seat version holds from 236 to 1806 liters.
For the Korean SUV, a surround view system, engine start with a button, an Infinity audio system with 10 speakers, dual-zone climate control and a 220 V outlet in the rear are available. The SUV also got the Smart Tailgate system, which automatically opens the tailgate if the driver with the key is near the rear of the car for about three seconds.
In South Korea, the SsangYong Rexton G4 is available with an e-XDi 2.2 turbodiesel (181 hp, 420 Nm) and a Mercedes 7-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. For foreign markets, a petrol version with a 2.0-liter turbo four (225 hp, 350 Nm) and a 6-band Aisin automatic transmission is additionally provided.
